Seahawk II - Mechanical Design Lead

As the mechanical design lead, I managed a group of 5 mechanical engineers from concept development to verification and delivery. It was my job to ensure technical validity of our analysis and to establish sound documentation of our processes and results.

Responsibilities and Conributions

Trusted Contributor

Managing a fast-paced program is extremely challenging due to the dynamic nature of the application. I was trusted by the IPT leader to provide sound technical recommendations and present the material to the customer.

Mechanical Design Engineer

As a small team on a fast-moving program, everyone has to chip in to get the job done. I designed one of the two major mechanical systems for the project. Working in Creo, I leveraged 3D printing and other rapid prototyping methods to solicit feedback from stakeholders as quick as possible. I analyzed the system in ANSYS to ensure appropriate margin of safety, and then created drawings and worked with the vendors to produce the parts.

Numerical Analysis

One of the tricky parts of mechanical design is deciding what the input loads to the system should be. I was responsible for developing the load case to bound the problem. I worked with the subject matter experts to numerically model the problem in Matlab and to apply realistic bounds. The results from this analysis were the input loads for the rest of the mechanical design.
